The SSV IGW/920-IPM replaces conventional modems with an IP-based intranet or internet connection.

The device provides a 10/100 Mbps LAN interface used for the connection to the IP network.

The serial RS232 interface of the device emulates an AT command interpreter. The IP address of the other IP modem in each case serves as the phone number for the connection set-up. Alternatively, a DNS name or phonebook entry can be used. The module connected to an IGW/920-IPM can also use the same AT commands.

Reconfiguration is not necessary. The AT interpreter of the IGW/920-IPM is adjustable and can be adapted to special AT commands or parameters. Once a connection is established, a completely transparent RS232 connection between two IGW/920-IPM modems is available via the IP network. The IGW/920-IPM converts the RS232 data to IP packets. For IP addressing via internet, an integrated DynDNS client can be used. This allows absolute IP addresses to be replaced with DNS names.

A VPN can be used for secure communication between two IP modems over an intranet or the internet. For this purpose, the OpenVPN open source package has been integrated into the IGW/920-IPM firmware. Certificate-based or pre-shared key-based authentications and encryptions are supported. All data are signed via hash codes to rule out intentional data tampering.
