National Occupational Licensing Scheme scrapped, NOLA disbanded
The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) has announced that the National Occupational Licensing Scheme (NOLS) will be disbanded. The National Occupational Licensing Authority (NOLA) will be disestablished early in 2014.
Master Electricians Australia (MEA) has welcomed the announcement, saying that the model put forward by NOLA “favoured a lowest common denominator approach that made unacceptable compromises on health and safety”.
Australian states and territories will now work together to develop alternative options for minimising the licensing impediments to labour mobility across state and territory borders.
MEA says it will continue to push for a high-quality mutual recognition scheme that makes no compromises on electrical safety and will facilitate electrical contracting businesses being able to operate smoothly throughout all states and territories.
