Super-efficient light bulbs win international competition

The winners for the Global Efficiency Medal competition, recognising the latest products in super-efficient household LED lighting, were announced at the United Nations Environment Programme in Paris last month.

Nanoleaf and Cree were two manufacturers to come out on top, with their winning LED light bulb products proving more than 80% more efficient than comparable incandescent light bulbs and more than 25% more efficient than compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Nanoleaf won the international award in the commercially available category for 60–75 W replacement lamps with its Nanoleaf One product. It also won the regional category for Australia for the most efficient commercially available product using new technology.

Cree took out the new technology category for 100 W replacement light lamps.

The Cree BA21-16050OMF-12DE26-1U100 uses 82% less energy than a comparable incandescent light bulb.

The competition is run by the Super-efficient Equipment and Appliance Deployment (SEAD) Initiative under the Clean Energy Ministerial and has an international collaboration of 17 member economies.

The Clean Energy Ministerial also announced a Global Lighting Challenge aimed at accelerating the phasing in of high-efficiency, high-quality and affordable bulbs.

The SEAD Global Efficiency Medal competition will contribute by identifying highly energy-efficient products on the market around the world to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions and spur manufacturers to produce and sell more energy-efficient products.

“There are rapid efficiency improvements and cost reductions taking place in the global lighting industry,” said Gabrielle Dreyfus, the US lead for the SEAD initiative.

“This competition helps bring attention to that progress and to innovative manufacturers of leading-edge products.”
