The EtherCAT I/O system has been expanded with fibre-optic-compatible hardware, EK1501 EtherCAT coupler and the EK1521 junction terminal, enabling more flexible topologies including line, ring, tree and star.
Using a standard ethernet cable, the maximum distance between two stations is 100 m, but the fibre-optic modules extend networking distances up to 2 km using 100Base-FX.
The fibre-optic coupler connects EtherCAT to an arbitrary number of EtherCAT terminals via SC duplex sockets. A further fibre-optic module can be optionally connected via a second port, negating the need for an additional switch.
Applications for the fibre-optic module will primarily be in widely distributed systems, such as wind farms or high-tension systems. Even cable redundant systems with fibre optics can be realised using the device.
