Philips will light the majority of football stadiums in the Ukraine and Poland, including the Olympic stadium of Kiev (NSC Olimpiyskiy). These stadiums are, amongst other, venues for the European football championship this year during this summer’s football tournament.

Philips’ latest innovations have been designed to provide HDTV quality and contribute to enhancing the viewing experience for players, spectators and TV viewers. The installed energy-efficient lighting includes pitch and facade lighting, illuminating six of the eight stadiums (Donbass Arena, Metalist stadium, Kharkiv, Arena Lviv, Poznan City stadium, Municipal stadium Wroclaw and Kiev Olympic stadium) that will be hosting the games.

The Kiev Olympic Stadium in Ukraine is able to host 60,000 spectators. Its tailor-made lighting system includes a total of 608 Philips ArenaVision sport floodlights for a lighting concept that combines functional and decorative solutions to create the effect of a 'ring of fire' on the stadium’s roof edge.

Philips performed lighting calculations, reconciled power and control systems and supervised the installation, including the targeting, commissioning works and lighting design measurements in cooperation with partner organisations. Philips is also supplying HeartStart FRx mobile defibrillators to Kiev’s Olympic Stadium.

The stadium in Poznan was the first arena completed in Poland to host this summer’s soccer tournament. The stadium is notable for its dynamic, coloured lighting of the outer facade, using LED lighting systems. A total of 195 Philips LED projectors, plus a control system and software, were used to illuminate the outer facade of the Poznan stadium, thereby enabling dynamic colour changes. As a result, the Poznan arena is endowed with the additional ability to build emotion during sporting, entertainment events and concerts (eg, using the colours of the national or club squad) taking place in the stadium.

The LED projectors are particularly durable (50,000 h), and yet consume very little energy (the power of a single projector is just 55 W). Using energy-saving solutions in the project is in accordance with the policy of the city of Poznan, which for years has been consistently focusing on the environment and on sustainable development, for example as host of the COP 14 Climate Change Conference.

Philips’ ArenaVision sports lighting already equips more than half of the world’s major football stadiums. Philips has long pioneered lighting innovation in sports, from the 1952 Olympic Games in Oslo to the first Formula One (F1) night race. For years, Philips has been the technical partner of international sports federations such as IAAF (athletics), FIFA and FIBA (basketball). Through these partnerships, Philips has helped to draw up official specifications and guidelines for floodlighting in sporting venues.
