TransGrid delivers transformer to Tomago

Wednesday, 31 March, 2010

TransGrid, the NSW electricity transmission network operator, recently delivered the second of two new transformers to Tomago Substation as part of a $45 million investment to increase the reliability of electricity supply in the region.

The new transformer, weighing 250 tonnes, arrived at the Tomago Substation on several prime movers and was accompanied by pilot vehicles and police escorts.

“Works on the new Tomago Substation commenced in April last year and the delivery of the second transformer, a key component of the new substation, is a major milestone for this important project,” said Dany Gittani, Project Manager at TransGrid. “This substation will incorporate the latest technology, equipped with two state-of-the-art transformers, which will boost the reliability of supply to local distribution networks. After its completion, the substation will have the capacity to supply the equivalent of around half a million average homes in the Newcastle and the Lower Mid-North Coast regions.”

The substation upgrade is part of a package of works being conducted by TransGrid in the area to upgrade the electricity transmission network. TransGrid is also upgrading its existing transmission line network between Tomago and Stroud.

“Tomago Substation is a vital part of the region’s electricity network, and TransGrid is making important investments to support the reliability of electricity supply for customers in these areas,” added Gittani.
