Low harmonic drives

Thursday, 09 July, 2009 | Supplied by: Danfoss (Australia) Pty Ltd

The VLT low harmonic drive eliminates the harmonic disturbances on the supply grid by actively imposing currents into the grid so that the high-quality sine wave of the grid current is restored.

Preventing harmonic disturbances is becoming increasingly important with the employment of more powerful frequency converters. It’s expected that the huge potential for energy savings by employing frequency converters will increase the number of drives — and hence the potential harmonic disturbance on the supply grid.

The device is built on a highly modular technology platform and has the same modular build-up as normal Danfoss high-power drives and shares features like high energy efficiency, back-channel cooling and user-friendly operation. It is available in the power range of 160 to 710 kW.

The drive continuously regulates the network and load conditions without affecting the connected motor, while causing no increased winding stress or reduction of the bearing lifetime. It is suitable for generator-powered installations, such as those used in back-up systems.
