Future Vehicles 2016 conference

Thursday, 12 May, 2016

The Future Vehicles 2016 conference has been specifically designed to assess the rate at which autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles may be adopted, the policy settings needed and the broader implications of this fundamental shift. The event will be held from 31 May–2 June 2016 at the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney.

With major manufacturers unveiling their visions for the autonomous vehicle, and authorities moving towards licensing them and developing infrastructure and policy to support them, the latest advanced driver assistance systems suggest we are already on the cusp of making the once-futuristic concept of autonomous driving a reality.

This would constitute the most fundamental change in transportation since the advent of the steam engine.

Significant investments are being made by the automotive industry and governments to accelerate the pace of innovation, while all stakeholders — including insurance companies, taxis and freight companies — carefully watch to help them build their future strategies.

The event will address the key challenges facing self-driving stakeholders, including:

  • forecasting timelines, benefits and barriers for the adoption of self-driving cars
  • streamlining vehicle efficiency through the implementation of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) technologies
  • understanding the infrastructure requirements that are crucial to supporting automated driving
  • getting to grips with the far-reaching implications for supply chains, infrastructure, transport and automotive industries
  • analysing how to overcome safety concerns surrounding self-driving cars
  • identifying the latest cybersecurity tools to secure future vehicles
  • addressing the legal challenges and regulation requirements for self-driving cars.

Organisers say that delegates will:

  • analyse how autonomous vehicles will fundamentally change society, with a focus on key stakeholders
  • gain a better understanding of the implications self-driving vehicles will have on future city planning
  • take away learnings from the discussion on the key policies that need to be developed to address the legal challenges of future vehicles
  • gain insights into how safety concerns and improvement opportunities will be key drivers of the self-driving revolution
  • identify current gaps, challenges and opportunities in the field of vehicle automation research and development
  • explore different levels of autonomy for vehicles and how and when these will be achieved.
