More airbag problems for Toyota
There's a new crop of airbag issues for Toyota, this time for its Prius and Lexus models. In Australia, the company has issued a recall on vehicles from the Prius ZVW30 and Lexus CT200h ranges.
Apparently the vehicles' curtain shield airbag inflators could have a small crack in the weld area, which could grow in time and lead to separation of the inflator chambers. This means one or both sections of the inflator could enter the interior of the vehicle and therefore represents a significant hazard to occupants. The issue is not confined to Australia, with the car maker recalling over 480,000 vehicles in the US as well.
Toyota has had a rough trot with airbags of late, with the dust still not settled on the Takata disaster that encompassed around 850,000 vehicles in Australia alone. First uncovered in 2013, rectification works are still ongoing, so further troubles are probably not the most welcome turn of events.
The company will directly contact customers affected by the latest issue.
