Self-driving truck gets the green light
German carmaker Daimler has unveiled the world’s first self-driving truck authorised for use on public roads in Nevada.
Approval has been given for two Mercedes-Benz Freightliner Inspiration trucks to commence regular driving on public roads. Wolfgang Bernhard, head of the company’s Truck & Bus division, said that the company is now seeking similar authorisation in Germany.
The trucks are fitted with sensors and active speed regulators and are permitted for use without a driver. It doesn’t spell the end for human involvement, however, as a driver needs to be present in order to monitor the system and intervene if required.
Daimler aims to make the vehicles commercially available in 2025.
