World Safety Day - 28 April
World Safety Day is celebrated on the 28th of April around the world as a day where the occupational health and safety of workers is recognised. Workers, employers and governments take this day to remember and prioritise the importance of a health and safety culture.
Spearheading the event is the International Labour Organisation, partnering with a large number of international organisations including: the International Organisation of Employers, the International Trade Union Confederation, World Health Organization, International Social Security Association, Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, National Research and Safety Institute for the Prevention of Occupational Accidents and Diseases, the Workplace Safety and Health Institute and Workplace Safety and Health Council.
The theme for 2015 is The Prevention of Occupational Diseases. Approximately 2.3 million die each year due to work-related causes, 160 million illnesses are reported and 300 million non-fatal accidents occur. While prevention in the workplace has saved millions of lives, and reduced accidents and disease, there is still work to be done. Not only does prevention increase productivity, but many work-related diseases have no effective cure. For example, adaptation of work environments, such as ergonomics, can prevent repetitive strain injuries. Workplace wellness programs can also help treat risk factors such as smoking and obesity to improve overall worker health.
