Brightgreen receives B Corp certification
Australian LED lighting company Brightgreen has announced it has been awarded certification as a B Corporation, a worldwide movement of over 1000 companies striving for higher social and environmental standards.
The company joins the growing movement of around 1500 companies, including well-known brands such as Etsy and Ben and Jerry’s.
Brightgreen is one of only 75 Australian companies to have received the certification.
B Corps meet a higher standard of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability with the goal of driving a cultural shift to redefine success in business.
Similar to what fair trade is for coffee or Green Star Ratings are for buildings, the certification ensures every aspect of a business meets a high standard — not just one focus area such as sustainability or ethical trade.
Brightgreen said the achievement is the result of a rigorous evaluation process that takes into account the impact a company has on the wellbeing of all stakeholders, such as employees, suppliers, customers, the community and the environment.
Founder and CEO David O’Driscoll said the evaluation process provided a chance to reflect on possible areas for improvement and growth within the company, including achieving carbon neutral status by 2017.
“We’ve identified the potential to become carbon neutral on both the business and product level by the end of the year, with some of our new products set to become carbon positive,” he said.
