Education the key to reducing skin cancer within the electrical industry

The Cancer Council of Australia reports that approximately 34,000 cases of skin cancer and 200 melanomas caused by sun exposure in the workplace are reported every year. Because of these alarming statistics, Pro-Visual Publishing has responded with a call for education through its 2009 edition of the Electrical Industry Guide to Workplace Safety.

The safety guide addresses this issue by focusing on the health risks associated with overexposure to UV radiation. The guide also provides advice on preventive measures that can be put in place when working outdoors.

The Safety Institute of Australia believes this year’s guide will serve as a reminder to employees and contractors of the importance of maintaining a healthy and safe workplace.

“The guide is a constant visual reminder of possible risks and hazards, and provides great information and tips on the use of tools and working in different areas,” said Barry Silburn, National President for the Safety Institute of Australia.

Also featured in the guide are the topics of how to conduct a risk assessment and the safe use, maintenance and storage of tools.

By displaying the chart prominently, employees have a daily reminder and employers are reducing the cost of workplace accidents, illness and injury.

The guide will be distributed free of charge in June and July 2009 to all mid to large electrical contractors throughout Australia. Additional copies are available and all guides are produced and distributed without cost thanks to sponsorship.
