The energy supply industry has welcomed the appointment of Gary Gray as the new federal Minister for Resources and Energy.

According to Matthew Warren, Energy Supply Association of Australia (esaa) CEO, the industry is looking forward to working with the new minister on energy policy development and implementing reforms from the Energy White Paper.

“It’s a challenging time for the energy sector in Australia,” Warren said. “The way we generate, distribute and use energy is changing rapidly as we respond to climate change, introduce new technologies and move towards a lower emissions economy.

“As the new federal energy minister, Gary Gray can continue the federal government’s agenda on reforms commenced at the end of the 20th century to deliver competitive and efficient energy markets around the country.”

Warren said further energy market reform was crucial to keep prices competitive, unlock export opportunities and support the long-term competitiveness of the Australian economy.

“We need to continue the white paper reform process to lock in long-term energy supply and keep prices down for families. It’s a big job, and we look forward to working with Mr Gray to keep up momentum on energy market reform.”

Gray has also been appointed Minister for Tourism and Minister for Small Business.
