Industry welcomes streamlined environmental approval process

The move to streamline environmental project approvals has been welcomed by the energy industry. At the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting, Prime Minister Tony Abbott signed memorandums of understanding with all state premiers and territory chief ministers that give state and territory governments the power to decide on projects assessed under Australia’s main national environmental laws.

“Establishing a single approval process will remove unnecessary duplication and make it simpler and quicker for energy and resource projects to get off the ground without diminishing environmental protection,” said Matthew Warren, CEO of the Energy Supply Association of Australia (esaa).

Currently, environmental project assessments have to go through a number of assessments, including separate ones for state and federal approval. The new model will allow for a streamlining of project assessment for investors, the esaa says.

“A one-stop shop will deliver much-needed certainty and transparency of decision-making for energy and resource projects. Removing barriers for development will help to attract investment,” Warren said.

“Removing roadblocks to expedite energy development projects is crucial. The Productivity Commission found that the approval process for gas projects can take up to a year, delaying millions of dollars in investment, jobs and production.

“The esaa welcomes the federal government’s initiative and looks forward to working with them and state and territory governments to implement this important reform.”
