It’s hip to be square: Brightgreen’s D900 wins Melbourne Design Award
Brightgreen has taken out the Lighting category of the 2012 Melbourne Design Awards with its D900 Cube LED downlight.
The Design Awards’ panel of design experts and the voting public judged the D900 - claimed to be the world’s first square LED downlight with a square beam - as the best in the Lighting category.
“We worked really hard to innovate with the D900 Cube,” said David O’Driscoll, Brightgreen CEO and head product designer. “We’ve been exporting it to Germany for a while so it feels great to be recognised by the Melbourne design community.”
Brightgreen says the D900’s innovative design allows for greater efficiency, control and aesthetic alignment with straightedge spaces. A new version of the light has a 15% increase in efficiency over the original, with recessed springs offering easier installation.
The light’s sustainable features helped it secure first place in its category at the Design Awards. It operates on only 16 W but outputs the same brightness as a premium 50 W halogen, using a third of the power. Its long life of 70,000 hours - the equivalent of 30 years of household use - and its toxin-free, fully recyclable composition were viewed favourably by the judging panel.
