NBN Co's new CEO gets to work
Ellie Sweeney has officially commenced in her role as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director at NBN Co.
NBN Co said Sweeney, who previously worked at Vocus as CEO and Chief Operating Officer, brings a wealth of experience and deep understanding of the telecommunications landscape.
“It is an enormous privilege to lead an organisation that plays such a pivotal role in shaping Australia’s future,” Sweeney said. “My vision for our future is rooted in the conviction that by expanding and enhancing our digital infrastructure and technology, we can drive meaningful change and ensure that all Australians can thrive.”
A key aspect of the role will be responding to rapid hikes in data consumption.
“Over 20 million Australians utilise the nbn network on a daily basis. We have seen the average Australian household consume 10 times more data per month than it did 10 years ago, and we know that data consumption is expected to double every five years,” Sweeney said.
“It is a pivotal time for nbn as it continues to deliver significant network investments that are driving social and economic benefits for the nation, including the contribution of $122 billion in GDP between 2012 and 2022. And by 2030, the nbn network is forecast to add up to $399 billion to the size of the Australian economy, worth around $68 billion (or 2.7%), 113,000 jobs and enable more than 55,000 additional businesses.”
Sweeney described the nbn as critical infrastructure in today’s digitally connected world.
“We’re not just building and maintaining infrastructure; we’re building Australia’s future. By continuing to expand, enhance and innovate, we can drive meaningful progress and make a fundamental difference to the social and economic fabric of Australia,” she said.
Sweeney thanked Philip Knox for his leadership as Interim Chief Executive Officer, adding that she looked forward to his continued support as he returned to his role as NBN Co’s Chief Financial Officer.
