Dr Luigi Barone, director of simulation and optimisation at Schneider Electric, has been recognised for research into optimising the efficiency of bulk-handling supply chains at the 2014 South Australian Science Excellence Awards.

The awards showcase the critical importance of science and research to the development of industry and society. Dr Barone was awarded the Early Career Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Professional award for research into optimisation and efficiency of bulk-handling supply chains in the mining, agriculture and wine industries.

The Minister for Science and Information Economy, Gail Gago, congratulated Dr Barone for his award and thanked him for this contribution to the state’s science community.

“Award recipients like Dr Barone are exceptional leaders who are passionate about science. Their achievements continue to raise the profile of science and the vital role it plays in our prosperity, economic growth and international competitiveness,” said Gago.

Barone’s research is part of Schneider Electric’s Integrated Planning and Optimisations Solutions (IPOS). These solutions enable mining companies to optimise plans and schedules, identify risks and deviations, pinpoint inefficiency and ultimately present the right information to the right people at the right time. In the mining sector these solutions have been proven to increase business productivity by up to 20%.

The solutions draw on the latest advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and operations research. They can evaluate dynamic variables in real time, identify and adapt to new trends, and learn from previous experiences. Schneider’s optimisation and prediction platforms include: Advance Planning & Scheduling (APS), Supply Chain Network Optimisation (SCNO), and Demand Planning and Forecasting.
